Colour Responsible Policy

I, Gemma Sandercock, follow a Colour Responsible Policy for the safety and peace of mind of my clients.

SKIN TESTING AND SCREENING FOR SENSITIVITY AND REACTIONS

I use testing and screening to check suitability for the colouring products I provide.

You may choose either;

A) Colourstart Passport (MHRA APPROVED METHOD)

Colourstart is a preferred method of skin testing due to being quick & easy for the client with the colourstart passport, it's carried out at home, covers you for lots of colours and means you don't need a skin test every 6 months (or for every colour change). It also has the added benefit to clients as they're able to book last minute hair colouring appointments with just a few screening questions to ensure its safe to continue with colouring.

To start, please register on the Colourstart website by clicking here and create your passport. Answer the screening questions, buy here and apply your Colourstart Patch following instructions. Upload your results to your online passport then share your results with me (I am registered with Colourstart). Once you have created your passport and completed your first test, subsequent colour treatments require you to answer the screening questions – testing with a Colourstart test may not be necessary unless something changes. Your Colourstart Passport will confidentially store your records.

B) AAT (Allergy Alert Test)
For your first AAT with me or if it is 6 months since your last AAT, please make an appointment to attend the salon at least 48 hours before your appointment. This can be done online here. I will apply a small amount of colour formula to the back of your ear or inside of your elbow. Leave for 48 hours, should you experience any signs of irritation, reddening, swelling, inflammation or itching please contact me.

If you develop symptoms that make you unwell please contact a medical professional. When you attend the salon I will observe the test site and ask you to complete a questionnaire. Subsequent colour services may not require an AAT test subject to screening questions. I advise you to let me know before your appointment if there are any changes or if you want to change your colour as this may require another AAT. I will test and screen for suitability for colour services. I have lots of experience in safe colouring as my clients will be well aware of – you can be sure I only use the best products and invest in the most up to date practices. I take your safety and my work/business seriously. I would like to thank you in advance for complying with all relevant up to date tests and screening before your colour appointment with me.

Consultations

Every new client or existing client who wishes to change method or colour must book a consultation in with me before their appointment. This can be easily booked online here.

Consultations are needed so I can carry out relevant tests for your hair and colours to ensure the service you wish is suitable for you. We can discuss colours and set expectations. We will go through a consultation form and then screening questions on the day of the appointment.

Skin Testing FAQ

How much is Colourstart and where do I buy it?
Signing up and ongoing screening on the passport is free. The Colourstart test is £15. You can buy it from my online shop by clicking here. To support this convenient method of testing, when you buy a Colourstart test I will take £5 off your next three colour services. Please speak to us to activate this.

Can you tell me more about Colourstart?
Colourstart has been registered and approved by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) – subsequently I have to follow the guidelines as set out by the regulations. It is supported by the Colourstart Passport. Your details are securely and confidentially held on your passport. Once you have tested with new Colourstart, subsequent colour services only require screening on your passport which could be just a couple of minutes. Potentially you could make an appointment and get your hair coloured on the same day.

Why is it Gemma's preferred method for screening for colour allergies?
You are in control of your passport and therefore your testing and screening. It is confidential, I only get to see your result if you choose to share it with me. You can use your Colourstart passport for screening for any colour services in any salon. Example, if you have brow tint service booked in, you can use the same test, there's no need for retesting. If you are travelling and you need to use a different salon, you can share your passport result with any salon (as long as they're registered and insured to use Colourstart). You can get your service done with little notice, you do not have to wait 48 hours for a skin test.

I've been told Colourstart is not suitable for me – why is that?
If you are pregnant or have active dermatitis you cannot test with Colourstart. You should speak to your stylist about an AAT (Allergy Alert Test) in the salon.

How long does an AAT take and how much does it cost?
You will need an AAT appointment at least 48 hours before your colour appointment but no more than 5 days before. An AAT only takes 10 minutes in the salon and will be done free of charge.

Why do I need a skintest?
Reactions to hair colour can be serious and even life threatening. There are strict guidelines from manufacturers, insurers, industry bodies and the MHRA around using hair colour. I endevour to give you peace of mind so that you can safely enjoy your visits to the salon.

Why don't you test me every time?
I use screening to monitor the need for testing you before your service. If nothing has changed since your last test and we have a valid record (within the last 6 months) it will be OK to proceed with your service.

I have been colouring my hair for years, why do I need a test?
One of the triggers for sensitivity and reactions to hair colour is exposure over time, therefore it is important I keep monitoring for your safety. I am committed to your safety and use only the best products and methods for hair colouring.

Do I need a consultation?

Its strongly advised you book for a consultation to ensure we can proceed with your desired service. Failure to book a consult may lead to disappointment and a 'missed appointment' fee on the day of 50% of the booking value. If you're unsure if you need one, please email or call me to discuss further.

How much are consultations and how long will I be?

Consultations are £10 if booked alone and will take 30 minutes.

Alternatively, you can opt to book in ADD ON Consultation with another hair cutting appointment and this will be free and take an extra 15 minutes.
